Skiathos Town
The city of Skiathos is the only built-up area of the island. It is built on the southeastern tip of the island in a windless bay which separates the island of Bourtzi in two. It is a relatively new settlement, built in 1829 - 1830 on the site of the ancient city, on two hills situated at the edge of the sea.
The large Port of the modern city is ideal in shape and location, it has been a basic element in regulating the life on the island both in the old and in the modern times.
In the modern city of Skiathos, the houses are small and simple, with two floors in their majority and built amphitheatrically one next to the other. The streets are narrow without any typical planning apart from a few parts in the city. The pretty capital of Skiathos is a maze of small, narrow streets lined with an assortment of tavernas, boutiques, and plenty of clubs and bars offering music to suit most tastes.
Megali Ammos is the nearest beach to town and a regular bus service runs along the island calling in to many of the fine sandy beaches for which Skiathos is famous for. Visit the Bourtzi by the bustling harbour, where Greek tragedy plays are usually performed during the summer months or explore the back streets full of photo opportunities. Overall Skiathos Town is the perfect place for those wanting a variety of nightlife and a bit of action! If you feel like a change of scenery, board one of the daily ferries for Alonissos or Skopelos or sail across to the tiny island of Tsougria, which lies at the entrance to the port of Skiathos.
